Wilmington, Ohio – Richard Rinehart (USA) dominated Joe Carnicom’s (USA) technically set $10,000 Welcome Stake track at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington Winter Classic 5, claiming first and third place honors with Captain America 10 and Caesar, respectively.
Rinehart was not concerned about the challenges of the course, “They are both experienced horses, so I wasn’t worried. There were a few harder turns with the Liverpool right out of the corner and the one-stride across the middle.”
Rinehart set the pace early in the order with Caesar, a nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Chalet x Glorielle, with a smooth, double-clear effort in 33.959 seconds.
Returning as the second to last in the jump-off with the 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Contendro, Captain America 10, Rinehart caught the leading time and took the win in 31.672 seconds.
Captain “was quite heroic in the jump-off,” according to Rinehart, making a tight inside turn and galloping down to the last careful vertical.
Rinehart commented on his experience at WEC – Wilmington, “The first best thing is that is so close to home for us! It is so consistent. The footing is always great and the show always runs so smoothly, we are big fans of coming to WEC – Wilmington.”
The youngest competitor in the field, Amy Krebs (USA), earned second place with a new mount, Ike (Spartacus x Twister). Krebs nearly bested a field full of professionals as she guided the nine-year-old KWPN gelding to a quick time of 33.197 to secure second place.
