Ocala, FL – The $15,000 Buckeye Nutrition Futures Prix was the highlight event of the afternoon as a field of aspiring horse-and-rider combinations vied for top honors over tracks built by Colm Quinn (IRL). Rachel Schnurr (CAN) claimed the victory aboard Lauren MacMillan’s Crislin Van Den Bosrand Z (Carambole x Ikarla Ban Den Bosrand) with a lightning-fast performance in the jump-off.
A total of 12 horse-and-rider combinations managed to deliver a fault-free first round, but only five produced a double clean effort.
Schnurr rode the promising seven-year-old Warmblood mare to an effortless first round to advance straight to the jump-off. “It was a fast jump-off. I watched Francois go, and I knew my horse had a bigger stride, so from one to two I wanted to be really fast. I almost thought about leaving one out in the six, but thought that might be a bit scary, so I did six,” laughed Schnurr. “I knew if I was fast over the double to the last jump, I could catch everyone.”
The pair flew around the track to stop the clock at an unbeatable 36.025 seconds for the win.
Schnurr spoke about her talented young partner, “One of my clients own her. She’s done a handful of 1.35m classes. She did a futures prix here under the lights and was excellent. I had a rail, but she jumped fantastic. I’ve only shown her maybe six times, but she’s a winner. She makes your job as a rider easy.”
World Equestrian Center – Ocala has been an “incredible venue” to compete at according to Schnurr, “It’s amazing. I love it here. If I could show here all year, I would but I am Canadian, so I have to go home. But it’ probably one of the nicest facilities hands down that I’ve ever been to. The footing is excellent, the jumps are beautiful, and the staff is so friendly. I would live here if I could – maybe one day.”
Penny Brennan (GBR) and her 15-year-old Westphalian stallion, Vertigo Delorme (Chacco Blue x Faretana), just missed the top spot, finishing in second place with a time of 36.754 seconds.
Francois Lamontagne (CAN), piloting Groupe Zacar Inc.’s eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Lacros VDL, secured the third position with a swift and efficient time of 38.553 seconds.
