Ocala, FL – The $15,000 Buckeye Nutrition Futures Prix returned to the WEC Grand Arena under the lights to give the future superstars of show jumping a chance to compete in an atmosphere similar to the Saturday night grand prix. Ken Krome (USA) crafted a demanding course, and only four horse-and-rider duos advanced to the jump-off. Sharn Wordley (NZL) snagged the victory aboard North Face Farm’s Hagelin (Stolzenberg x Grafin Top), saving the best for last.
Leading the way in the first round, pathfinders Rodrigo Lambre (BRA) and his mount J’adore Van Het Klinkhof, a 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare by Thunder Vd Zuuthoeve x Tequilla Van Het Noordeneind, were the first to return, setting a quick pace at 37.742 seconds.
Cassandra Lorusso-Smith and Iceman Van De Nethe gave a good effort, but incurred faults along the way.
Second-to-last to return for the jump-off, Jelmer Hoekstra (NED) piloted Hoekstra Stables’ nine-year-old KPWN mare K-one Pgo (F-one USA x Odessa) to an even quicker track, edging ahead by a tenth of a second at 37.600 seconds.
Sharn Wordley and Hagelin were the final pair to attempt to take the win. “Coming back last always helps, then you don’t have to go too fast, you can do just enough to get them. I ended up shaving it a little too close though, I was trying to be a second faster, but it ended up being a tenth of a second faster, so I got a little lucky.”
“I did one less than Jelmer, I did five strides, and he did six, and that helped with the time. To the last, my plan was to have a good run to it, but Hagelin has such a big stride I ended up having to slow down,” shared Wordley about his ride in the jump-off.
The duo clocked a time of 37.534 seconds, securing the win and galloping away with the victory.
The 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding is still a relatively new partner for Wordley, “He is Erin Haas’ horse. This is my third show with him, and he’s been pretty fun to ride. We are just getting the partnership together and building up. We won the $15,000 class last week, and we’ve already won three or four classes together. He’s a good one. He’s a cheeky character, but he gets in the ring, he’s all business.”
