$20,000 NSBA 3-Year-Old Non Pro & Intermediate Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle

The $20,000 NSBA 3-Year-Old Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle was the highlight event of the afternoon in the WEC Grand Arena, welcoming 12 combinations to the rail to vie for the lion’s share of prize money. In the end, it was Jana Leigh Simons that piloted Simons Show Horses LLC’s 2023 stallion, Against The Laww (Outlaw Enterprise x Al Mine) to the win. Simons also claimed the Intermediate title.

“This is ‘Carlos’, and he’s Sara [Simons] horse, she picked him out earlier this year. Amanda Jackson had him from Amy Walls from Canada, and he hadn’t really been shown. He showed in the Maiden, and Jesse Jones has shown him quite a bit here. So I really just got to enjoy him! Everyone had him ready, and I got to come, be with my sister, and enjoy the ride,” she smiled.

“This place is amazing,” Simons shared about WEC – Ocala. “I’ve brought some all-around horses here before, so it’s not my first time, but everyone here does such a great job putting these shows on. It is managed so well, the facility is incredible. It’s like no place you’ll ever show.”

Beyond the facility itself, Simons highlighted the significance of the class offerings and prize money. “To have $20,000 for the Non Pro and Intermediate is definitely worth making the trip. Hopefully people continue to support what they are doing with the prize money, because they do a great job allocating it across the divisions. A $20,000 Non Pro class is pretty rare, so it’s really special to be able to show for that kind of money.”

Twenty horse-and-rider combinations competed for top honors in UF Health Indoor Arena 2, but it was Nick Mayabb who led the way, securing both first and second place. He topped the class aboard Elizabeth Ann Maggert’s Cookin Somethin Up and returned to claim second with Kelly Summers’ Dive Bars.

Mayabb earned a score of 235 with Cookin Somethin Up, the five-year-old gelding by Hay Goodlookn x Caught Me Looking. Reflecting on the win, he shared, “We won the Junior Trail at Congress last year and qualified for the $100,000 class tonight.” Speaking to the gelding’s strengths, he added, “He’s very powerful and a great mover through the poles. He picks his feet up well, and he always gives himself a chance if he stays clean.”

He also commented on Dive Bars, a 2021 mare by Best Brew At The Bar x Certainly A Good Bar, who finished second in the class. “She was reserve here in the Maiden Trail earlier this week. She just started showing here, and she’s an exceptional trail horse. To step up into the junior right away was great, so she’s going to be a lot of fun this year.”

Eighteen horse-and-rider combinations kicked off feature competition in Jumper 2 with the $10,000 NSBA Jr Ranch Riding, but it was Ryan Kail of Cave Creek, Arizona, who piloted Lane Kail’s SS Walk The Line (Wimpys Little Step x Aledo Advance) to the win with a score of 240.5.

Kail spoke about the 2021 gelding, whom he purchased this past fall, “Rory is a five-year-old gelding by Wimpy’s Little Step. He’s like a big dog, like Clifford the Big Red Dog. He’s wonderful. We bought him at the Congress last year from Jordan Martin, and he’s been incredible for us,” he shared.

“I first noticed him at the Congress. I didn’t know Jordan at all and thought she was a youth rider since she had just come out of the youth, but she had taken him on as a project and done a great job with him. When I watched him in the four- and five-year-old class, he was almost flawless. I got on him, and we ended up buying him. He’s actually the first ranch horse I’ve bought that was already finished and broke in all the events, so that’s pretty cool.”

The trip to World Equestrian Center – Ocala is a long haul for Kail, but he noted it’s well worth the experience gained. “It’s about a three-day trip out here and a three-day trip back, but we love coming to show here. It’s worth it for us to get this experience, especially showing outside and getting the horses that exposure.”

Twenty-four horse-and-rider combinations took to Jumper 2 to contest the $10,000 NSBA Sr Ranch Riding, but it was Clayton Jarrell who piloted Wendy McConnell’s Lets Double Down to the win with a score of 245.

The 2018 mare by High Roller Whiz x Dunitz Midnight Glo holds a special place for Jarrell. “I’ve had her for five years. She’s pretty special. We’ve been through some stuff together. She’s a fighter,” he shared.

He also spoke about the longtime partnership with her owners, Tim and Wendy McConnell. “Tim and Wendy McConnell have been with me for over 10 years. She’s the first ranch horse they bought, and they got her for me to show while their kids were heading off to college. Their middle daughter was showing her, but now she’s in law school, so I get to have her to myself again for a little bit. She’s just really special.”

Reflecting on the pattern, Jarrell highlighted a key moment. “She had a great breakdown from the extended lope to the extended trot. That’s kind of a tricky maneuver. I just said, ‘Hey, let’s trot,’ and she snapped right into it. I knew then, even with four maneuvers left, we were going to do something special.”

He also credited his team behind the scenes. “I just want to thank everybody that’s here helping me. It’s been a long two weeks, but it’s paying off today,” he said. “My wife did an incredible job. She hasn’t been showing the ranch horses much, but she was reserve in the limited. That was really cool.”

$6,000 NSBA 3-Year-Old Non Pro & Intermediate Non Pro Western Pleasure

In a unanimous decision, Kristen Galyean piloted her own 2023 mare, Girl Code (VS Code Red x Missy Machine), to victory in the $6,000 NSBA 3-Year-Old Non Pro Western Pleasure, building on her win the day prior with trainer Aaron Moses.

After her win, Galyean shared more about the special mare and their journey from the beginning. “She’s just incredible and very special. Her breeder, Paulette, is a good friend of mine, and we really studied who we thought would cross well for her mom. I recommended VS Code Red, and she went with it. From the moment she hit the ground, I had been trying to buy her.”

“She didn’t want to sell her until the end of last year, but when she finally decided to, it all worked out,” she added. “She’s just extremely special and reminds me a lot of Vital Signs Are Good, her attitude, her movement, she’s just a freak!”

When it comes to the venue, Galyean shared that it is a standout on her show schedule. “The venue is just insane. It’s actually my girls’ and my favorite. We look forward to it most of any horse show. They love it here, and I mean, how could you not? It’s beautiful. They’ve made it so top-notch, and it’s just an incredible experience.”

$6,000 NSBA Maturity Non Pro & Intermediate Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle

A field of 15 horse-and-rider combinations took the rail for the $6,000 NSBA Maturity Non Pro & Intermediate Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle, but it was Kaleena Weakly that took the top spot with Josh Weakly’s 2021 gelding, Dun Gone Southern (Its A Southern Thing x Ten Karat Romance). The duo also claimed the Intermediate title.

In just their second show together, and a fairly new discipline for Weakly, the duo shared a glimpse into their bright future ahead. “This is Carl, also known as Dun Gone Southern. He’s five, and this is our second horse show together. I just got him at the end of last year, and he’s just a dream. He’s absolutely amazing and a blast to show in every class we enter.”

Reflecting on the win and their early success together, she shared her excitement about the result. “Yes, it’s amazing. I wasn’t expecting that,” she laughed. “He won the Color the other day, but it was a smaller class, and I just wanted to go out there and see how he could hang, and how I could hang. I’m kind of new to doing the Hunter Under Saddle, so it was really fun.”

She also spoke about what drew her to ‘Carl’ and what he brings to the arena. “I bought him for his versatility and his personality. He loves his job, he never says no. Out in the class, he has a great presence about him, his ears are always up, his topline’s fantastic, and he’s great-legged.”

Parrish was quick to compliment his winning mount and reflect on their partnership. “She fits me as well as any horse I’ve had in a long, long time. She’s great-minded and has a lot of natural talent. Her look, her attitude, and her movement. I just think she’s exceptional. I have more of a special bond with her than I’ve had with a horse in a long time.”

“She really wants to do her job,” he added. “She’s happy doing it, and that makes my job a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable.”

Hartman noted that ‘Conway’ makes her time in the ring extra enjoyable. “He really loves showing, and that makes it so enjoyable because he goes out there and wants to do his job! We’ve had him for almost a year now, and he’s just fun. He’s easy, his legs are always great, and he always has the cutest little expression. We’ve built up a really good partnership, and I’m excited for the rest of the year.”

Lane Kail & SS Walk The Line. Photo by Shane Rux Photography.

The Lane family continued their winning streak in the $5,000 NSBA Amateur Ranch Riding, with Lane Kail claiming both top honors. He secured the championship aboard SS Walk The Line (Wimpys Little Step x Aledo Advance) with a score of 234 and earned the reserve title with He Man on a 229.50.

Kail spoke about SS Walk The Line, a 2021 gelding, and what sets him apart. “My favorite thing about him is that he’s kind of a push horse. He needs a little motivation to go, but that’s what makes his breakdown so pretty and his stops so good. He’s always willing to do it.”

“He’s done a great job for all of us. He’s won at just about every big show so far, Sun Circuit, Vegas, and he’s been very successful everywhere. He’s just an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime horse.”

He also shared his thoughts on his reserve mount. “We got him when he was three. I really liked him, and even though my dad was a little unsure at first, my mom and I convinced him, and it worked out. He’s been great. He was top 10 at the World Show in the Level 3 Junior Ranch Riding, and I just started showing him here. He’s been really consistent, top five in all the amateur ranch events so far. We finally got him out of the third spot today. He has a lot of personality, is very talented, and he’s a really special horse.”

Carol Dewrell topped the $5,000 NSBA Select Ranch Riding aboard her own Clooney, earning a winning score of 234.

Dewrell spoke about the 2019 gelding, “He is by SD Frozen Enterprize and out of a Machine Made mare. I’ve owned him for a couple of years now.”

She was quick to credit the team behind his success. “Logan Pluhar, who works with Bud Lyon, is his assistant trainer. She is amazing, and he absolutely loves her. John Irish put a great foundation on him, but Logan has really made him into a great horse. She gets all the credit.”

Beyond his talent in the arena, Clooney’s personality stands out most to Dewrell. “He’s just a clown. I can’t drink a bottle of water because he takes it away from me. He wants to drink it, so I have to bring two if I want any. He loves cookies, he loves people. He’s just very personable with lots of personality.”
