Camille Maynard Earns Career-Best Score Aboard Dutton in the $10,000 UF Veterinary Hospital USHJA National 3’ Open Hunter Derby
26 JUN 26 Ocala, FL
Ocala, FL – Hunter Derby Friday took over the WEC Stadium during WCHR week as the $10,000 UF Veterinary Hospital USHJA National 3’ Open Hunter Derby and $10,000 USHJA National 3’ Jr/Am Hunter Derby served as the featured events of the morning and afternoon ahead of the $40,000 Ethel M Chocolates USHJA International Hunter Derby under the lights. Course designer Joe Carnicom crafted flowing tracks that showcased horses in spectacular form.

Twenty-eight top hunter combinations took to the WEC Stadium during WCHR week to contest the $10,000 UF Veterinary Hospital USHJA National 3’ Open Hunter Derby. Camille Maynard ultimately claimed the victory aboard Susan Ross and Anne Hormel’s Dutton after earning a standout classic score in the high 90s.
In the first round, Maynard and Dutton delivered a near-perfect trip, earning an impressive score of 98 from the judges. “That’s the best score I’ve ever gotten,” expressed Maynard. “It just happened so nicely. Sometimes you can’t really pinpoint exactly why, but he felt happy and confident, and he trusted what I asked him. He followed me and I followed him, and I think as we followed each other, that’s what made it turn out so nicely.”

Returning for the handy round with a sizable lead, Maynard opted for a conservative approach. “Coming back for the handy, I wanted to be more conservative. I knew I had a big lead, and obviously, you don’t want to get arrogant and screw it up. Beforehand, Matt Martin and I looked at all the different high options and thought about which ones were going to be more advantageous to us than others. He’s a little stronger off the right lead and sometimes likes to swap, so we decided that at the second high option, the oxer, maybe we’d just come in smooth and jump the low one.”
The strategy paid off as the pair earned an 86 in the handy for a two-round total of 184 and the win.

The nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding has been partnered with Maynard for several years, with the rider taking a patient approach to his development. “He’s been a little bit slow to develop, but I really do believe he can do it. I hope he jumps 3’6″ and I hope he jumps in international derbies. I think he could be amazing, but we just have to wait and have him tell us when it’s time for that. I thought maybe it was going to be this year, and it wasn’t, but again, that’s fine. There’s no finish line or end goal.”

Hayley Waters Wear Sweeps the $10,000 USHJA National 3’ Jr/Am Hunter Derby

Hayley Waters Wear delivered a historic performance during WCHR week in the $10,000 USHJA National 3′ Jr/Am Hunter Derby, sweeping the podium with first, second and third place finishes aboard Nitemoves (Zento x Naminka), Genuine (Diarado x Kampari W) and Bull Run’s Luminous (Valentino x Cleophatra).

Waters Wear ultimately took the win aboard Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Waters’ Nitemoves with scores of 91 and 94 for a winning total of 185. Genuine followed close behind in second on a score of 182, while Bull Run’s Luminous rounded out the podium with a 172.
“It feels great! I’m so lucky to ride these horses!” said Waters Wear of claiming all three top placings in the class.

Leading off the derby aboard Nitemoves, a seven-year-old Zangersheide gelding, Waters Wear used the first round to establish a plan for the rest of the day. After watching the earlier class won by Camille Maynard and Dutton, she looked to replicate the same successful approach.
“The first round was nice, I went first on Nitemoves but was able to make a plan based on the first derby,” she explained. “Camille’s round was beautiful. I watched it a couple of times and just tried to replicate it as best as I could.”
While each horse required a slightly different strategy in the handy round, Waters Wear adjusted her plans based on how each trip developed.

“I actually jumped the lower option on accident on Genuine, so I adjusted the plan there!” she laughed. “I was more conservative on Nitemoves.”
The strategy proved successful, with Nitemoves producing the most consistent effort of the trio and securing Waters Wear’s second consecutive derby victory aboard the talented gelding.
“He was my most consistent horse today, he’s such a good boy.” she said.

Following an unforgettable sweep of the podium, Waters Wear plans to give the horses a chance to recharge before setting their goals for the remainder of the summer circuit.
“They’re going to have a couple of well-deserved weeks off, then we will make a plan for the rest of the summer.”
