Ocala, FL – The $15,000 Buckeye Nutrition Futures Prix was the highlight event of the afternoon at World Equestrian Center – Ocala. Thirty-three developing combinations contested the track built by FEI Level IV course designer Alan Wade (IRL), where Richard Spooner (USA) and Halcon owned by Molly Ohrstrom rose to the occasion to secure the win.
“It was a good course today. They are using the FEI jumps, which is incredible for the horses to see a new spectacle. It was a twisty track with a triple combination at the end and a tight time allowed. I think I went a little too quick in the first round because I ended up being significantly under,” said Spooner.
In the jump-off, Spooner and the seven-year-old Argentinian Sport Horse stallion stopped the timers at a blazing fast 28.814 seconds.
“I just wanted to win,” laughed Spooner. “Once I left that stride out from one to two, I just let it persist. He’s a machine of a horse. You wind him up and let him go. I just try to stay out of his way because he’s an extraordinary athlete.”
Gwyneth Babington piloted Anton Marano’s nine-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding Dinapo (Bogegardens Dicapo x Apona) to second place in 29.216 seconds, while Rachel Schnurr and her own nine-year-old Zangersheide gelding Copain De Picobello Z (Cicero Z Van Paemel x Only Picobello) rounded out the top three with a time of 30.201 seconds.
