Ocala, FL – The $24,000 C. Jarvis Insurance Welcome Prix was the highlight event of Week VI of the 2024 Summer Series. Twenty-five horse-and-rider combinations competed for top honors, but it was Alberto Michan (ISR) and his new partner, Joint De Canabis Van De Doornhoeve (Canabis Z x Evidento V.d. Doornhoeve), who emerged victorious.
FEI Level II course designer Tucker Williams (USA) set a challenging track with a tight time allowed. Only five pairs managed to jump-clear and stay within the time allowed, advancing to the jump-off where only three produced a double clear effort.
Alberto Michan and Joint De Canabis Van De Doornhoeve were the first to go in the jump-off. “I knew there weren’t too many in the jump-off, and the first two didn’t jump clear, so I just tried to go a bit quick but not too crazy fast. We still have the grand prix Saturday. So, the plan was to jump a nice clear round. If they beat me, they beat me. But, I was lucky enough that they weren’t faster. I think I had the time because his stride is humongous. He’s a bit slower than other horses because his body is just so tall and long, but his stride makes up for it,” Michan explained.
Michan piloted the 10-year-old KWPN gelding to a quick and clear round, stopping the clock at 41.975 seconds to secure the victory.
“We got him in the beginning of this year. I loved him the second I tried him,” Michan said. “I had a fall in the winter and broke my foot, which took a little while to recover. But, in a way, I think it was good because he’s still a bit young and needed more experience. Now we have time to get to know each other. He’s been clear in the past five classes and has been knocking on the door, so I am very excited to keep developing with him because I think he has a very bright future ahead.”
Tracy Fenney (USA) and MTM Farm’s 10-year-old Warmblood gelding MTM Peanut (Capistrano x Radunar) claimed second place with a clear jump-off in 43.277 seconds.
Maya Denis (MEX) rounded out the top three with her own 10-year-old stallion Chagolando PS (Chacco-Blue x Conthargos), just one-tenth behind Fenney in 43.367 seconds.
