Wilmington, Ohio – Winter Classic 1 of the 2024 Winter in the Midwest Series saw Izzy Beisel (USA) return to her winning ways with Vegas H (Valentino x Cobrah) in the $10,000 Welcome Stake at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington.
As the first to go in the order, Beisel proved her dominance amongst a field of professionals over FEI Level IV course designer Guilherme Jorge’s (BRA) tracks.
The young rider of David Beisel Stables in Goshen, Ohio, continuously impresses with her ability to answer difficult questions and rises to the challenge in the ring.
“The course was really challenging by the way Guilherme set the jumps using all of the space in the ring. Everything still rode really nice, and it was smooth. It was a really fun course. Luckily both of my horses just came off of indoor season, so we had some practice with the jumps coming at you quickly. I definitely think there were some parts that if you messed up one jump, you weren’t having good luck at the next,” Beisel noted about Jorge’s tracks.
Beisel and Vegas H are longtime partners and have tackled some of the trickiest tracks together with top results, including the USEF Junior Jumper National Championships at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, but their recipe for success is simple, “In the summer, I ride him bareback a lot! We just flat him and we really only jump courses right before the horse shows. Vegas just hangs out!”
A double clear effort was light work for the familiar pair. Beisel guided her 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding to a jump-off time of 37.284 seconds and maintained the winning time.
Stephen Foran (USA) immediately followed and was quick on Beisel’s heels in 38.964 seconds with Freedom Woods’ 10-year-old KPWN gelding, Idool (Zirocco Blue VDL x Diamant Fee), to ultimately earn second place.
With the fastest jump-off time of 35.274 seconds, but an unfortunate four-fault score, Patricio Rodriguez piloted his own 11-year-old Warmblood mare, Corvet Enigma (Corvet Embrujo x Remonta Portuaria), to third place.
