Wilmington, Ohio – The final Hunter Derby Friday of the 2024 Fall Classic Series at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington commenced in the R+L Arena where 20 combinations met for the $15,000 GGT Footing USHJA National Hunter Derby. Tammy Provost impressed with Angela Pietig Brown’s Mariner, securing their second career derby win together.
“This is only his third derby and he has won two of them! He was very green when we first got him, so this is a huge victory,” Provost was thrilled with Mariner’s progress. “Angela [Pietig Brown] was able to go from the 2’6” to the 3’ because he has grown up a lot. He has just liked my program and it has all worked really well. We just love him and he is a really special horse.”
The duo earned a first-round score of 91 to return for the handy sitting in second place. Though the winding track did not particularly suit Mariner, Provost found brilliance in his natural big stride.
“He is great at galloping. I thought it was going to be hard to squeeze through the inside turn to the last jump in the handy, so I landed and just galloped. He is such a big beautiful horse with a great gallop and huge stride,” Provost shared. “I didn’t know if I could make the inside turns on him. I did a little bit in the schooling ring and knew that I could get inside after jump one. I saw the long one early to jump two and I got there so I could wait to it and I was able to make the turn inside.”
The 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding was in textbook form for a second-round score of 89 and a winning two-round total of 180.
Provost discussed the benefits of developing her mount at WEC – Wilmington, “To have this facility only three hours from us is a game changer. People who wouldn’t normally be able to show so many weeks can get off work Friday night and come here. It is convenient, the footing is nice and the jumps are great. We don’t go anywhere else where the jumps look like this. The decorations look different all the time and that makes the biggest difference.”
Thrilled with her horse’s development, owner Pietig Brown was, “actually in a bit of shock!”
“Tammy does such an amazing job with him. We would never be where we are without all of the people at the farm. He gets to see different things coming here and I think it really helped him progress a lot since we are able to come here so much. I am really lucky to have him; he is one in a million for sure.”

Havens Schatt & Cascartini Emerge Victorious in the $12,000 Sport Horse Insurance Group 3’6”-3’9” Hunter Derby
The $12,000 Sport Horse Insurance Group 3’6”-3’9” Hunter Derby stole the show Friday afternoon in the R+L Arena at Fall Classic V, where Havens Schatt partnered up with her old derby mount, Cascartini, to take the win.
Having imported the now 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding as seven-year-old, Schatt was happy to return to the derby ring with ‘Marty,’ “It was really fun today! I knew they had this class here and we wanted to do him in it. He is so scopey and it is so easy for him! I know him so well that riding and showing him is just like putting on a glove.”
“I imported him as a seven-year-old for my clients Ken and Amy Wexler. He went right into the first-year greens because he is so scopey. He started doing some easier derbies that year and then he was champion at the National Horse Show,” Schatt shared. “Julia McNerney had always loved him and wanted to try him. She ended up buying him and it is a perfect home for him. They started in the adults and won the NAL Adult Hunter Finals last year at Capital Challenge.”
The duo posted a high score of 94 in the first round, returning in lead for the handy. Schatt followed her good friend and competitor, Colin Syquia and Front Page, and mirrored each handy effort to secure the victory.
“Colin [Syquia] is a really good friend of mine and it is really fun to show with him. I know he is super handy and he does a lot of jumpers. Going back in, I just had to tell myself that if I was second to Colin, then I was second to Colin,” Schatt laughed. “I didn’t do anything too crazy. I did all of the inside turns in the handy, which for a bigger horse like ‘Marty’ can be hard, but the jumps are so easy for him that he can still just land and turn.”
A second-round score of 94 and a total of 188 was enough to take the lead.
