Ocala, FL – On Friday evening, the $15,000 Buckeye Nutrition Futures Prix returned to the WEC Grand Arena under the lights. Thirty-five up-and-coming combinations challenged a technical track built by FEI Level III course designer Oscar Soberon (USA), but it was Tracy Fenny (USA) that snagged the fastest time on the talented seven-year-old Holsteiner mare Can Talk To Me TD MTM (Catoki x Ocarina), owned by MTM Farm.
Only seven of the 35 starters managed to answer all of the questions asked in the first-round to return for the jump-off.
“I stepped up in the order, because I didn’t think I’d be a contender to win. My goal was to give her a good experience, go her speed and give her a confident ride for her age,” Fenney shared about her original plan for the jump-off. “The jump-off was a lot of galloping; the shortest line was a seven. The rest were 12, 14, 15 strides. I just tried to keep thinking go forward. I didn’t even reach her full gear.”
Fenney and Can Talk To Me TD MTM found each fence on an open gallop right out of stride to stop the clock in 49.534 seconds to take the win.
Fenny was very happy with the talented young mare and thinks she has a very bright future ahead, “She was great under the lights. She did last week too, and we had just one time fault. I am really excited. I mean, what a great class to do for developing horses. Dorrie [Douglas] and I, were thinking, ‘oh my gosh, this is hard,’ because the horses ride so differently at night. It’s taking the next step, they have to learn at some point and to be able to teach horses this young, it’s awesome.”
Luis Sabino Goncalves (POR) kept up with his successful streak with a second-place finish aboard his new partner Pst De Muze (Vigo D Arsouilles Stx x Clinton) owned by Sigma Stables LLC. Goncalves and the eight-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare were just shy of the leading time in 50.167 seconds.
Chloe Reid (USA) rounded out the top three with Live Oak Plantation’s scopey eight-year-old Oldenburg mare Chelsea 179 (Cador x Laudana) in 50.211 seconds, just four hundredths of second behind Goncalves.
