How to Choose the Right Supplement for Your Horse

01 Dec 17 | Wilmington, OH

Social Media Post - General KPP

The horse that matters to you matters to Kentucky Performance Products, LLC. That is why we offer a full line of research-proven supplements that help your horse face the everyday challenges of training, hauling and competing.

At Kentucky Performance Products, scientifically based formulas and top quality ingredients mean you can count on each scoop of supplement to deliver results. Our product specialists are available online, over the phone or via email to answer your questions. They are there to help you decide which supplement will keep your horse performing at its best all season long.

Why and when to use a horse supplement

Horse supplements are used to:

  • Address specific challenges.
  • Fill nutritional gaps in the diet.
  • Maintain healthy body functions.

It is not uncommon for horse owners to feed several different supplements throughout their horses’ lifetime. Age, health status and usage dictate the type and level of nutritional support a particular horse requires. Meeting these needs helps to maintain optimal performance and overall good health.

Often a basic diet of forage (hay, pasture, hay cubes) and concentrates (sweet feed, pellets, plain grains) won’t meet all your horse’s unique needs. The more a horse trains and competes the more likely it is they will need some additional nutritional support in the form of supplements. In many cases, supplements are incorporated into a treatment plan to support healing during and after illness or injury. In senior horses, supplements can be used to support soundness and maintain good health

The key to finding the right supplement is to identify your horse’s unique challenge and pick the supplement that addresses the need. This strategy reduces the risk of over-supplementation and allows you to determine if the supplement is providing the support your horse requires.

Common challenges facing the performance horse and the supplements recommended to address them.

Supplement recommendations for horses with sore, stiff muscles, tying up, bad attitude when being ridden, poor muscle development, unwilling to engage and move forward:

  • Elevate® Maintenance Powder
Maintains natural vitamin E levels, which supply essential antioxidants; supports healthy muscle, nerve and immune functions.
  • Myo-Guard™
Provides vitamin E, selenium* and vitamin C, three antioxidants that support healthy muscle function in hardworking performance horses.

*Before feeding additional selenium, review the selenium levels in your horse’s current diet or discuss the change with your veterinarian. Feeding too much selenium can cause toxicity.

Supplement recommendations for horses with colonic and/or gastric ulcers, diarrhea, hindgut imbalances, mild gas colic, poor immunity levels; horses that are maintained on high-grain diets and/or are often in stressful situations such as traveling and showing:

Social Media Post - Neigh-Lox Advanced

  • Neigh-Lox® Advanced
Supports normal GI tract function from stomach to hindgut; contains stomach buffers and coating agents, the true probiotic saccharomyces boulardii and a host of prebiotics. Supports the healing of damaged tissues and maintains a well-balanced digestive tract.

Supplement recommendations for horses with limited access to grazing (less than 16 hours per day) because of heavy training and show schedule; horses with grazing restrictions due to metabolic illness:

Elevate® Maintenance Powder
Maintains natural vitamin E levels that support healthy muscle, nerve and immune functions.

Myo-Guard™ compete antioxidant supplement

Maintains essential antioxidants including natural vitamin E, selenium* and vitamin C that can be deficient in hardworking performance horses.

Social Media Post - Myo-Guard

*Before feeding additional selenium, review the selenium levels in your horse’s current diet or discuss the change with your veterinarian. Feeding too much selenium can cause toxicity.

Supplement recommendations for horses at risk for electrolyte imbalances and dehydration, exercised in hot weather, sweat often or daily; poor drinkers:

  • Summer Games® Electrolyte powder and paste
Supports electrolyte replenishment in proper ratios and stimulates the thirst response; provides trace minerals often lost in sweat. Low-sugar formula. Summer Games® Plus Paste contains stomach buffers that support a healthy stomach.

Supplement recommendations for horses that are hard keepers maxed out on grain but need more energy; have a poor appetite:

  • Equi-Jewel® stabilized rice bran with 18% fat to provide extra calories
Maintains healthy weight and reduces hormone spikes that lead to excitability; reduces the need for large grain meals.
  • Neigh-Lox® Advanced
Maintains a well-balanced digestive tract from stomach to hindgut, which supports more efficient feed utilization and increased appetite; supports optimal starch and sugar digestion, which reduces the incidence of hindgut imbalances related to acidosis.

Supplement recommendations for horses that are competing and training hard; horses with joint inflammation, pain and soreness:

  • Joint Armor™
A complete joint supplement that supports healthy cartilage development and maintains quality synovial fluid within the joint.
