Wilmington, OH – The third and final week of the 2022 OH Summer circuit commenced with the highly anticipated $10,000 Welcome Stake 1.35m held in the bright and airy WEC Sanctuary arena.
Veteran course designer Keith Bollotte, built tonight’s track, where just six of the seventeen pairs managed clear first rounds. Four pairs went on to place double-clear but none could catch Darby Pease and Louisa R Robb’s Carel Van Donderen (Acolino 4 x Terania DIe Hoeghte) who notched their first Welcome Stake win.
Pease and the seasoned fifteen-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding gained an early lead, negotiating each jumping effort with speed and precision to take top honors. Pease and Carel Van Donderen clocked a speedy 73.862 second finish in round one and advanced directly to the jump-off. The duo stopped the clock at 38.479 securing the $10,000 WEC Welcome Stake victory.
Pease went on to claim the second-place spot award aboard Tyson Ziebarth’s Fenn. Fenn is a newer mount for her and they are quickly on their way to the top. The pair recently won the $10,000 Futures Prix at WEC Spring II and tonight clocked speedy times of 75.472 seconds in the first round and 40.660 seconds in the jump-off.
Charles Casey and Double C Sporthorses’s HJ Bernie Sanders rounded out the top three placings. The eight-year-old bay gelding made a 79.251-second qualifying time in round one and stopped the clock in 41.816 seconds in the jump-off to take home third place honors.
Wilhelm Genn and Quincidence, were the first pair to earn double-clear bragging rights, clocking 77.670 seconds in round one and 42.200 seconds in the jump-off to take home fourth place overall.
