Ocala, FL – Week VIII of the 2023 Ocala Summer Series came to a close this afternoon as 25 horse-and-rider combinations competed over Catsy Cruz’s (MEX) classic tracks in the $10,000 THIS 1.40m Jumper Classic. Cruz’s challenging tracks stumped many, and not one rider was able to produce a double clear effort, but Andrea Torres Guerreiro (COL) and her own Fifty Shades (Call Me Number One x Sheltana) found the quickest four-faulter jump-off track to ultimately take home the win.
Six athletes managed to jump their way to short course, but all fell victim to one or two rails down.
Guerreiro and Fifty Shades produced an efficient first round well under the time allowed to advance to the immediate jump-off. Guerreiro and the 15-year-old Westphalian gelding soared through the track, taking one rail with them in 39.142 seconds, more than two seconds faster than second place.
Guerreiro spoke about her veteran partner Fifty Shades, “I’ve had him since he was five and he’s now 15. He’s done all the big stuff. Today, I got a little lucky because there were no clears in the jump-off. The course was more difficult than I thought it was going to be. Catsy is a fantastic designer, she’s tough, but that keeps me on my toes. The horse was great as always, he’s was just out there having fun today.”
This is the first time back to World Equestrian Center – Ocala for some time for Guerreiro, “I came the first year, but I am so glad to be back. It was beautiful last night. The $100,000 was a lot of fun and I had a really good Welcome on Thursday. I will definitely be coming back more.”
Guerreiro complimented World Equestrian Center – Ocala’s venue, “The footing is incredible. It poured right before the class yesterday and I thought they were going to have to cancel, but not even 15 minutes later the ring looked perfect. That doesn’t happen, it’s unheard of. The footing was beautiful, and the horses jumped great because of it. That arena is fantastic, it’s so big you can make all sorts of mistakes,” joked Guerreiro. “It requires a lot of fitness, so I am going to go home and work on that for a week and be back for the last. We love coming here and we will be coming back much more often.”
Robert Mendoza and Holly McPherson’s United M found the second fastest time with one down in the jump-off in 41.521 seconds to take home second place honors.
Brooke Kemper and CM Sporthorses, LLC’s Seaview Demonstration rounded out the top three with a time just shy of Mendoza in 41.792 seconds with one rail down.
